I really enjoyed this article about $4 coffee in today's environment.
The real reason is Starbucks always was, and remains, an expendable lifestyle fad rather than an authentic communal experience. When times get tough, $3 and $4 daily drink treats are the first to go. Unless they contain booze, and the potential to go home with someone new.
