Fool's Gold: Coney Island

I laugh my ass off every time I read of these schemes to bring Coney Island back 100 years to it's glory.

I'll tell you how.

Call Disney and tell them to go nuts.

Call the Mohegan Sun Native Americans and tell them they own the ancestral lands and can open casinos.

Declare Guiliani King Of Coney Island and let him do there what he did to Times Square.

Kick out the knuckleheads and don't feel bad for one second.

Here's the latest dopey idea:

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz discussed yesterday another Coney Island project: a $64 million plan to build a partially-enclosed amphitheater at Asser Levy Park — located at West Fifth Street and Surf Avenue, near the New York Aquarium. He wants the spot to be on par with Jones Beach, the Garden State Arts Center and Radio City Music Hall as a stop on musician’s summer world tours. In the winter, he hopes it could be used for ice skating, junior soccer leagues or other recreation.

The Municipal Art Society hopes to get the creative juices flowing again with “Imagine Coney,” an initiative it launched yesterday soliciting visions from around the world for the area’s future. The nonprofit also brought together a dream team of international amusement experts, architects and economists for an intensive design workshop that will culminate with a plan to be unveiled next month.
